Chameleon is a hide-and-seek painting game where blending in is everything. Beyond the basic mechanics of painting and hiding, there are strategic spots, techniques, and tricks that experienced players use to stay hidden longer and outsmart seekers.
Perfecting Your Color Match
The Color Picker tool (press C) is your best friend for survival. Rather than guessing at colors, use it to sample the exact shade of walls, floors, or props around you. When your character matches the environment perfectly, seekers won't spot you even if they're looking in your direction.
Spend a moment before hiding to gather color samples from multiple surfaces. If you're near a wall with mixed textures, sample from different areas to get the most accurate match possible.
Using Freeze to Stay Completely Still
Press F to freeze in place. When frozen, your character becomes a static object—no movement animation, no breathing, nothing that gives away your position. This is essential when a seeker is nearby and scanning the area.
The trick is knowing when to freeze. Freeze just before a seeker enters your area, or as soon as you hear them approaching. Any movement, even subtle walking, can break your camouflage.
Brush Application for Precision
The Brush tool (press B) lets you paint specific body parts instead of your whole character. Use this for fine detail work—paint stripes to match wall panels, paint only your head to match a ceiling, or target your legs to blend with floor textures.
Brushes are slower than Fill, but they give you control. If you've already filled your body and just need to touch up one arm to match a nearby prop, the Brush is faster and more precise than recoloring everything.
Undo and Redo for Last-Second Adjustments
Made a painting mistake? Press Q to Undo and try again. Press E to Redo if you changed your mind. These tools save precious seconds when you're scrambling to match a new hiding spot or correct a bad color choice before a seeker rounds the corner.
When to Taunt
Taunts (press T) are meant to distract seekers or celebrate a successful hide. However, using a taunt reveals your position and breaks stealth. Save taunts for moments when you're safely hidden and want to mess with the seekers—or after you've already won. Premature taunting is a common way to get caught.
Understanding Seeker Abilities
Press R to see the seeker's active abilities. Seekers have tools to hunt you down, and knowing what they can do helps you stay one step ahead. Some abilities might flush you out or reveal your position temporarily, so adjust your strategy based on what's available to them.
Learning the Maps
Every map has predictable hiding spots—corners with specific color patterns, props that match certain parts of your character, or areas where seekers naturally search last. Spend time exploring each map during practice rounds to memorize the best color samples and safest positions.
Props are often easier to match than walls because they're smaller and more detailed. A vase, painting, or decorative object in the corner can hide you perfectly if your colors are right.
