Chameleon is a hide and seek game where hiders paint themselves to match the environment while seekers hunt them down. The better you blend in, the longer you survive. Here are the core strategies every beginner should know.
Master the Color Picker (C)
The color picker is your most important tool. Press C to sample colors directly from the map. Look for walls, floors, props, and backgrounds your character can match. Don't guess at colors—grab exact matches from your surroundings. This is the difference between standing out and disappearing.
Use the Brush and Fill Strategically
The brush (press B) lets you paint specific areas of your body, while fill (press G) covers larger sections fast. Use fill on big surfaces like your torso and legs to match walls or floors quickly. Use the brush for fine details and blending edges where two colors meet. A clean blend between your head and body makes you much harder to spot.
Hide in Plain Sight
The best hiding spots aren't always behind objects—they're where you can match the background. Paint yourself the color of a wall, stand against it, and stay still. Seekers scan for movement and unusual shapes. The more you look like part of the map, the longer they'll overlook you.
Freeze to Avoid Detection (F)
When a seeker is close or searching your area, press F to freeze in place. This stops any movement that might give away your position. Only move when you're confident the seeker has moved on. Freezing turns you into a prop, which is exactly what you want.
Undo and Redo to Fix Mistakes
Made a bad color choice? Press Q to undo or E to redo. Don't waste time repainting sections you messed up—just backtrack and try again. Speed matters early on before seekers get close.
Use Taunts Carefully (T)
Taunts are a tool, not just fun. Use them strategically to distract seekers or draw them away from other hiders. But don't taunt near your hiding spot—it gives away your location instantly. Taunts are best used as bait elsewhere on the map.
Learn What Seekers Can Do (R)
Seekers have special abilities (check them by pressing R). Understanding what they can do helps you avoid them. Different seekers use different tactics, so adapt your hiding spots based on what abilities are in play. Don't rely on the same hiding spot against every seeker.
Paint Before Seekers Start Looking
You get time to paint before seekers are released. Use every second. Get your main colors down and find a hiding spot early. Rushing your paint job or hiding late means you're caught with incomplete camouflage or caught in the open.
Match Multiple Colors in Your Outfit
Most areas of the map have more than one color. If you're hiding against a wall with a floor, paint your legs one color and your torso another. Break up your silhouette to match the geometry around you. A solid-color character stands out even against the right background.
Experiment with Different Hiding Spots
The same hiding spot won't work twice. Seekers learn where hiders hide. Try corners, behind props, under overhangs, and spots that blend with different textures. The more variety you use, the harder you are to predict. Spend time in each round exploring safe areas you can paint yourself into.
